Finding volunteer drivers usually isn’t difficult after the first few hours; by then, somebody’s likely to be happy for the rest break—except perhaps on long downhill runs.

In many ways, van-supported touring sounds idyllic. You can stay in motels and dine in fine restaurants, but after a while, being tied to the apron strings of the van may feel confining, continuously reminding you of your dependence on the internal combustion engine and all it symbolizes. Don’t be surprised if the time comes when you wish to cast loose and strike out on your own, regardless of the weight.

Credit-card and van-supported touring both require a greater degree of self-sufficiency than you need for catered touring, organized tours, century rides, or training rides on familiar terrain. The rest of this book focuses on skills and equipment that will make you increasingly self-sufficient, while also introducing the most self-contained of all forms of bicycle touring, loaded touring. How much of this information you need depends on the type of touring you want to do. You won’t need to learn much about bicycle camping, for example, if you never plan to spend a night outdoors. But you still need to know something about luggage racks and handlebar bags so you can carry sack lunches, rain gear, and a camera. Other skills, such as route-finding and map-reading skills, also benefit riders on virtually any tour.
